Our school recognises and values the importance of an enriching Art education. It gives children of all abilities opportunities to use imagination to create and achieve their potential. Children have the opportunity to work individually and within groups to develop both social and personal skills. Art is not just taught in isolation: wherever appropriate, it is linked to other areas of the curriculum and gives children opportunities to develop specific art skills year on year. Our high-quality Art and Design curriculum engages and inspires children, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art. Through their practise, they will know how Art and Design contributes, shapes and reflects our history developing their cultural capital. Our Art curriculum celebrates different cultures by exploring artists and art movements that comment on an ever changing world.

As a foundation subject, Art is taught throughout the year on Art curriculum days, as part of a weekly foundation session and solidified through termly foundation weeks. Children have the opportunity to develop their art talents through teacher input, research, international days of celebration, educational visitors, exhibitions, after school clubs and school trips which will develop skills, knowledge and understanding.

Expressive Art and Design in EYFS is taught through both specific activities and continuous provision, which is linked to their topics in class. Children have access to a variety of resources each day which exploring colour and texture equipping them to create their own compositions. Within EYFS, children develop the fundamental skills needed to become artists focusing on the names of tools, how to use them safely and matching tools to their purpose.

Throughout the year, both KS1 and KS2 follow units that cover influential artists and art movements, skills building (whether that be painting, clay, printing or pencil work) then a final unit that links to Design and Technology. We recognise the importance of natural links between Art and Design and Design and Technology, so felt it only right to strengthen these further (see attached overview). Skills developed in KS1 are fine-tuned and recorded through sketchbook work in KS2. Children develop their techniques, control and their use of materials with creativity, experimentation and an increasing awareness of different kinds of art, craft and design. Throughout both key stages, children are encouraged to become critical thinkers and evaluate works of art (including their own) through thoughtful questioning that inspires deeper thinking about creativity and interpretation of Art.

Children are taught about historical and cultural development in Art by learning about significant artists, designers, sculptors and architects. They have opportunities to create works of art, explore ideas and evaluate creative works using artistic vocabulary.
